Ramp Riding How-To

Ramps really are great skating tools. When you have a ramp, you don't have to worry about having a place to skate. Ramps can be mobile. Ramps help skaters make friends, get girls, make money, improve your health, and increase your life span. If you don't have one, set aside a Saturday and build one. Use the Ramp Plans

skating a ramp

When skating a ramp, bravery is essential. You just have to throw yourself off that ramp the first time you try it. Just roll at the ramp going fast (you'll lose speed when you go up the ramp) and keep those knees bent. Pop a big ollie, and land. Then try shove-its, kickflips, whatever. Put stuff to jump over, like trashcans. Build two ramps and have transitions (when you go up one ramp and down another). Have distance competitions. Have fun.

ramp tricks

Skating a ramp is quite different from the street; mainly, a whole world of new trick is opened for you to try and hurt yourself on. Here's a few:

BoardGrab

The Board Grab is the most basic of all ramp tricks. The board grab is quite simple: Get speed, pop a big ollie off the ramp, and reach down with your back hand and grab the front side of the board. The longer you hold it, the cooler it is. Bend those knees and ride away.

NoseGrab

The NoseGrab is a cool ramp trick where you grab the nose with your front hand. Pop a big ollie off the ramp but don't level the board too much; keep it sorta vertical. Keep the knees very bent. Reach forward and grab the nose with your lead hand. Now, level the board with your hand. Let go, land, roll away.

TailGrab

The TailGrab is self-explanatory. Get air off your ramp, and ollie. Now, you want to slide your front foot all the way up, and push the nose downward. Grab the tail with your back hand, and push down on the tail. This requires practise. Let go, land, roll away.

Kickflip to Grab

The Kickflip to Grab is a very spectacular-looking, but very difficult trick to learn. I recommend you master both kickflips and boardgrabs off the ramp. Now, pop a high kickflip off the ramp. Move your feet out of the way. Put your back hand down in the board's way. Extend that thumb! With practise, you will grab the board after it's done it's full rotation. Put the board under your feet, move your hand out of the way, and land.

Here's a way to practise this move: set up your ramp so it's going into the grass. Run and jump off the ramp without the board. Have a nearby friend lightly toss you the board while you're in mid-air. Have him toss it about where the board would normally be. Learn to catch the board and put it under you. This will take a long time to learn, but it's well worth it.

Tweak

The tweak isn't a move, it's more of an addition to a move. Here's what it is: say you're doing a board grab. Grab the board as usual. Now, pull up on the board with your hand and move your feet up with it. It will do a 90 degree rotation upwards. Then move it back down and land. Get it? This move can be added to ANY grab move. Experiment!
