Hoglands Skatepark

Skate boarders and rollerbladers have welcomed plans to build a new boarding and BMX-biking area in a Southampton city centre park.

The new facility would be sited between the Hoglands Park cricket pavilion and the boundary of the park facing Debenhams.

The metal structure will be based on a felt-like base and would occupy a 16 metre by 25 metre hard area. If it goes ahead it will take around a week to build.

The new park would replace the equipment currently in use at Mayflower Park which is in a bad state of repair and is unlikely to last beyond the end of the Summer when Mayflower Park closes for the Southampton Boat Show.

"It's made from tense steel so it doesn't actually clatter like a lot of skate board parks." John Garlinge, the Central Parks Ranger.

The skatepark, has been designed by a skateboarder and will feature ramps and other equipment.

The design actually goes into the ground on a concrete structure which will keep any noise to a minimum.

Local people are being asked for their views and have been invited to a public drop-in session where they can pick up more information.

The session takes place on Tuesday, March 20, from 3pm to 7pm at the East Park Pavilion, which is opposite the Southampton Institute's , East Park Terrace building.

The skatepark's plans are also available to see at the Civic Centre and Off Beat Sports in Above Bar Street, Southampton.

A questionnaire has already been distributed to residents nearby.
